Getting into
financial planning

Really, financial planning is the same as any other kind of planning. It needs two key pieces of information:

1: WHERE YOU ARE NOW

2: WHERE YOU WANT TO GET TO
If you don’t know where you are, or where you want to get to, then there isn’t much point in making plans – or in financial planning.

Alice in Wonderland

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where –” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.

“– so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”

In Ireland, if you’ve been to see a broker or an adviser before, it’s likely your conversation was around tax mitigation, what funds to invest in or which pension product is best for you. Those subjects are important (and dull), but only once you know where it is you’re trying to get to. If there’s no destination in the satnav, it doesn’t matter whether you avoid toll roads or not. That’s the difference between financial advice and financial planning.
When you come to see us it’ll be different. We’ll spend much less time talking about products and investments and much more talking about you, and about finding the right balance.

We’ll also ask you to give us a really good sense of where you are now; financially and in your life generally. That’s the first step of doing what financial planners do, which is this:

A financial planner can’t tell you what your goals are. But a really good financial planner can help you articulate them, give you the roadmap to get you there, and then be with you along the way.

And we are really good financial planners.

And that roadmap? At its heart will be a detailed, written financial plan. It will be your playbook for your financial future; and it’s something we’re both going to get to know very well.

In it will be investments, and tax, and products – but only if they support your roadmap and if they are in your best interests, not ours. That’s what we mean when we say ‘the highest standards of financial planning’, and it’s our commitment to you. You come first.
Our
services

Let’s be clear.

Every client is different – that’s what makes our job so rewarding. We don’t know whether our next client is a writer who thrills us, a sportsman who lifts us, a physician who heals us or a teacher who sets us on the right course.

The areas we’ll cover include:

  • Goal setting
  • Asset and debt analysis (to ascertain your ‘net worth’)
  • Income and expenditure analysis (we call this ‘cashflow modelling’)
  • Investment and risk analysis and modelling
  • Retirement and future income planning (to find your ‘number’; the amount you need for the retirement you want)

And along the way we’ll consider:

  • Insurance requirements
  • Tax optimisation
  • Education fees planning
  • Estate planning
  • Charitable giving and philanthropy
In putting together our financial plans for you, we mix together the more personal elements we’ve talked about so far with rigorous, comprehensive and sometimes complex financial planning techniques. Don’t worry! We will shield you from complexity (the financial services world is full of it) unless you enjoy that sort of thing.

To do this we use some of the most advanced tools and systems available to financial planners anywhere. Just a few of these include:
